Tuberculous peritonitis generally is associated with underlying immunodeficiency. Tuberculous peritonitis usually results from tuberculosis of the gastrointestinal tract. It is believed to be due to hematogenous spread, but can occur with perforation of bowel, lymph nodes, or fallopian tubes. Risk factors for abdominal tuberculosis include ...
Abstract. Tuberculous peritonitis is an uncommon extrapulmonary form of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, frequently presenting with nonspecific and insidious symptoms. Diagnosis is therefore difficult, unsuspected, and often delayed, especially in the pediatric patient without an obvious history of exposure to the pathogen.
Here, we present a case of a four-year-old child with tuberculosis peritonitis who was diagnosed by laparoscopic biopsy and histopathological examination and recovered with antituberculosis therapy. Peritoneal tuberculosis should be considered in younger patients and adults with fever, abdominal pain and weight loss in endemic areas.
On Ga-67 scintigraphy performed 2 weeks after the injection of streptomycin, the accumulation of radioactivity in the upper abdomen had disappeared. These findings …
Ascites was present in 67% (20) of the 30 patients, and laparotomy was used most frequently to establish the diagnosis. Diagnosis was particularly difficult in 13 alcoholics, in whom the disease ...
Laboratory observations. Laboratory observations are summarized in Table II and Fig. 1.The mean peripheral total white cell count did not differ significantly between the two groups, but the lymphocyte population was significantly decreased in the TBP group when compared with the SBP group (0.67±0.22×10 9 /l vs. 1.19±0.41×10 9 /l; P<0.01). The …
Introduction. In developing countries, tuberculosis remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Tuberculous peritonitis (TBP) is a rare form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis that constitutes less than 1% of all tuberculosis cases [1].TBP is primarily observed in young adults but has been reported rarely in young children [2], [3], [4].TBP …
Extrapulmonary tuberculosis accounts for a significant proportion of tuberculosis cases worldwide (about 20-25% of the cases). Nevertheless, the diagnosis is often delayed or even missed due to ...
Tuberculous peritonitis may occur at any age. Ingestion of bacilli with subsequent passage through Peyer's patches in intestinal mucosa to mesenteric lymph nodes is the possible route of infection [ 1, 2 ]. The treatment of tuberculous peritonitis is primarily medical, which is identical to those of pulmonary tuberculosis.
An 18-year-old man was admitted to our hospital for further examination of fever of unknown origin and ascites. Ga-67 scintigraphy revealed diffuse increased uptake throughout the abdomen. He was diagnosed with tuberculous peritonitis and began the treatment for tuberculosis (rifampicin, 450 mg/day orally and isoniazid, 300 mg/day orally, and 0.75 g …

Tuberculous peritonitis is rare in the United States but continues to be reported to occur in certain high-risk populations, which include patients with AIDS or cirrhosis, patients on continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis, recent immigrants from areas of high endemicity, and those who are immunosuppressed. The diagnosis of this …
Alcoholic liver disease is a significant risk factor of developing TBP. 10–12 Shakil et al. found that alcohol was the underlying cause in 90% of patients with cirrhosis who developed TBP. 10 The mechanism behind the increased susceptibility of ALD patients to this disease remains unknown. Unlike spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, factors such …
Background. Peritoneal tuberculosis is a rare site of extra-pulmonary infection caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB). Infection usually occurs after reactivation of latent tuberculous foci in the peritoneum, after hematogenous spread from primary pulmonary TB [1, 2].Less frequently transmural translocation from an infected …
Ga-67 scintigraphy revealed diffuse increased uptake throughout the abdomen. He was diagnosed with tuberculous peritonitis and began the treatment for tuberculosis (rifampicin, 450 mg/day orally and isoniazid, 300 mg/day orally, and 0.75 g of streptomycin by intramuscular injection 2 times a week). One year after starting the treatment, Ga-67 ...

Few cases of tuberculous peritonitis in pregnancy have been recorded. In these patients early diagnosis is important to prevent obstetrical and neonatal morbidity [ 1 ]. We report here a new case of tuberculous peritonitis that occurred in a Caucasian pregnant woman at 22 weeks' gestation. The diagnostic and therapeutic problems are discussed ...
Introduction. Although tuberculosis (TB) is on the decline in the United States, it remains a prevalent condition worldwide .The disease is caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis, affecting nearly 10 million patients per year and causing approximately 1.5 million deaths .While TB is typically known for affecting the lungs, the …
Direct extension from the genital tract has been described 11 . Tuberculous peritonitis is commonly classified as follows: wet type. most common (~90%) 1. . dry type. fibrotic-fixed type. Of …
Tuberculous peritonitis is a serious condition with rising prevalence in recent years. It is especially common in those patients with risk factors such as an immunocompromised state, chronic kidney disease, or cirrhosis/liver disease. Spread is typically hematogenous from pulmonary foci. We report o …

Trial of ATT (variably termed as a diagnostic trial or a therapeutic trial) is the standard strategy to discriminate GITB and CD in TB-endemic areas. For ITB, healing of ulcers with ATT is an objective criterion of response to ATT, while the resolution of ascites is the criterion in PTB [66, 67]. Because the delay in diagnosis of CD due to ATT ...
There are extensive compartmentalized ascites with thick enhanced peritoneum. Bilateral, almost symmetrical, enhancing adnexal lesions are seen. There are multiple enhancing omental nodules. Minimal bilateral pleural effusion. Both adrenals are unremarkable. The liver, spleen, both kidneys and pancreas appear normal. No definite pneumoperitoneum.
Peritonitis is a serious condition that starts in the abdomen. That's the area of the body between the chest and the pelvis. Peritonitis happens when the thin layer of tissue inside the abdomen becomes inflamed. The tissue layer is called the peritoneum. Peritonitis usually happens due to an infection from bacteria or fungi.
Abdominal tuberculosis is an ancient problem with modern nuances in diagnosis and management. The two major forms are tuberculous peritonitis and gastrointestinal tuberculosis (GITB), while the less frequent forms are esophageal, gastroduodenal, pancreatic, hepatic, gallbladder and biliary tuberculosis. The clinicians …
Peritoneum. Tuberculous peritonitis, usually the re-sult of spread from adjacent organs, should be suspected whenever a patient at risk for tuberculosis has ascites and a positive tuberculin skin test. Constitutional symptoms, including fevers and malaise, or abdominal distension and pain, also are common.
