Well, after 10 year of MN humid summers and dry winters and a cross-country move in a truck, it finally split. It's a nice enough table that I'd like to repair it, though. I assume poor glue job. Technically, the glue bonds better than wood fiber and the crack should have happened where there were no glue. Few things to consider, the table legs did not expand with the table top. Meaning end grains of the table legs do not expand as much as the long grains of the top and thus creating some sort of divergence.
That should help pull the split together and stop it from splitting more. Make sure and wipe up an excess wood glue completely with a damp rag. Once that's done you can fill in the rest of the crack with wood putty and stain in to match the table. For extra measure you can screw some steel mending plates underneath once you have the split clamped.
