Many people think of crushed red pepper as a simple spice. It's a pizza topping, stored alongside the oregano and Parmesan cheese shakers, or an afterthought, something to shake on dishes that have turned out a little bland. However, the health benefits of crushed red pepper extend beyond its use as a …
This one is an even draw; both having substrate or having a bare-bottom can negatively and positively affect the water chemistry in an aquarium. Some substrates like crushed coral can buffer the pH and hardness of the water. For a saltwater tank with a target pH around 8.0-8.4, this is a …
Additional Benefits. As if the cool-to-the-touch feel and attractive appearance of coral pavers and tiles wasn't enough, they are also remarkably safe. That's because they don't become overly slippery when wet. Slips and falls need to be avoided at all costs, but some pavers become extremely slick …
Fluorine, present 1.25 to 2.5 times more in coral than bone, is thought to help bone formation through its effect on osteoblast proliferation. Demers 2002. The main differences between natural coral and bone are the organic content and mineral composition. One third of bone is made up of organic components, compared with 1% to 1.5% of coral.
If that does not work, add a small amount of crushed coral, shells, limestone, dolomite chippings, or baking soda to your aquarium. These should be done carefully so as not to raise the pH too much. These should be done carefully so as not to raise the pH too much.
Crushed coral acts as a buffer to help keep the pH stable. It raises the KH (carbonate hardness). I had to add some to my tank last year because my tap water had a KH of almost zilch and low pH!! It's slow to work but really helps. I put mine into a long media bag and have it hanging from the HOB. There are some plants that hide it very well.

Crushed coral alone, even on a fo system, would still trap a ton of detritus. Besides, most people do decide to try coral, after a while with a fish only system, and going the reef sand route won't hurt the fish, even if you decide never to try a reef. Oh, and the 1-2mm sand doesn't blow all ovef the place. It stays in one place.

Crushed Coral, Live Rock Rubble, Biobals, Biorings and anything else similar will collect detritus and cause cascading water parameters. IMHO you're much better off keeping your sump as clean and "slick" as possible because it will be easier to clean. Merely because the sump is the lowest point in the system more detritus will accumulate there.
Crushed coral does not provide a very good biological zone, and many tanks are setup with CC from the get go through lack of knowledge or because it is the only substrate that an LFS sells and tells you that it is all you need, using a selling point of CC has buffering power.
I had better benefits in my tanks using these media's than any of the chemipure because the added media in the bag, exhausts quickly and becomes inefficient requiring a whole new nag being added. As for the crushed coral, it's not necessary. Your sand is a buffer.
There's always much talk about how to safely raise the pH level of your tank using Crushed Coral. However, I haven't found anything that actually shows supporting data for it. So, I figured I would throw this quick test together to help show the benefits of it. …
The continued effect of tourist destructive behaviour grouped into three categories such as rubble, scratches on top of coral colony, and crushed coral colony. Hmm, never tried it before. I believe crushed coral works "faster" when you put it in a hang-on-back or canister filter so that water was constantly traveling through it. When I just put the crushed coral in a media bag in the tank (because I didn't want to use it as substrate), the effect on KH was much more gradual. 1.
Crushed coral. Crushed coral is mostly a mix of limestone, coral skeleton pieces and shells in the form of a very course grain sand. Its grain size is usually larger, making it a great choice for tanks with high flow that can easily stir up the sand. It also ensures stability for rock work.
Yes, many aquarists add crushed coral to their freshwater aquariums when the water is too soft or acidic. The calcium ions released when corals dissolved raise the hardness of water, while the bicarbonate ions can make raise the pH of water and make it less acidic. To add crushed coral to your tank, simply add a handful to the base of your ...

Aquarium sand is usually made from crushed quartz, coral, or minerals such as aragonite, or is manufactured artificially from a silica base. Unlike natural sand, aquarium sand is uniform in size and shape and doesn't have any sharp edges which could injure aquatic organisms.
Crushed Coral is a dated substrate that is very rarely used today. ... The two biggest benefits to using the Arag-Alive!™ range of sands is that the bacteria contained within it will allow a faster aquarium cycle due to the bacteria already being colonized and because it is Aragonite based it will keep the water's Ph stable around 8.2 which ...
3,108 Posts. #2 · Jul 31, 2008. imo sand stays a little cleaner, I have used both, currently use both actually, and the sand tank looks nicer. There's some benefits of having a deep sand bed as well. Crushed coral will have its purpose, it does grow copepods like crazy which is good fish food, but overall if I had to pick one I would go with sand.
Please see this link for more information about using crushed coral as a buffer:
the sump had crushed coral and big coral in it. i have heard that there is some benefit to having it the a freshwater set up but i cant remember. if someone could help or send me to a thread that discusses this that would be great. thanks a lot, V
Don't think so - at least if you are referring to the denitrifying capability of live rock (as opposed to nitrification ). The crushed coral simply isn't thick enough to support the anoxic zones required for this - where generally - live rock does. As a nitrifying media, it will be just fine.
I'm also looking at a new empty tank and my thinking is to go with 25% crushed coral and 75% live sand/fine aragonite mixture. I like the advantages of crushed coral with pH buffering, porous structure for bacterial growth, and release of various trace …

2.) crushed coral does collect a lot of detritus (fish poo) and can become a nitrate factory (bad) unless you want the additional duties of syphoning it out a lot to keep it clean (most people don't...especially "noob's" as they have enough other things to worry about). 3.) aesthetically sand just looks better (personal opinion).

A lot of lfs try to sell us crushed coral to use as a substrate in our marine tanks. It's not good it acts as giant nitrate factory and really causes some long term issues with your tanks health.
