Recycled aggregate from crushed broken clay brick (RCB) with 4.5-9.5 mm diameter obtained from construction site. RCB was from local clay bricks with compressive strengths of 5.0-9.0 MPa. The specific gravity of RCB was 2.02 with dry-rodded density of 950 kg/m3. RCB had high water absorption at 16.2% and high Los Angeles abrasion loss at 42.4%.
aggregates—sand, gravel, crushed stone, and air-cooled blast-furnace slag—produce freshly mixed normal-weight concrete with a density (unit weight) of 2200 to 2400 kg/m. 3 (140 to 150 lb/ft. 3). Aggregates of expanded shale, clay, slate, and slag (Fig. 5-3) are used to produce struc-tural lightweight concrete with a freshly mixed density

The objective of this work was to study the effect of ground clay brick on mitigating the Alkali Silica Reaction (ASR) in mortar bars prepared with highly reactive aggregates.
This paper investigated the effect of clay brick powder (BP) on expansion behaviors of mortar bars using rhyolite aggregates, local volcanic rock from central Thailand. The accelerated test condition (ASTM C 1260) was used in this study. The expansion of samples with varying percentages of BP as cement replacement were compared to those of cement mortar bars.

properties of concrete with recycled concrete aggregate and crushed clay bricks. Ahmad et al. [19] investigated the creep behavior of normal strength concrete made from crushed clay bricks as coarse aggregate. Afshinnia et al. [20] studied the effect of ground clay brick on mitigating the alkali silica reaction in mortar bars.
The alkali–silica reactivity of the aggregates selected in this study varied from nonreactive to slowly reactive based on their historic field records. The ASR susceptibility of these aggregates was determined using two different testing protocols based on the RI.

Several million tons of solid waste are produced each year as a result of construction and demolition activities around the world, and brick waste is one of the most widely wastes. Recently, there has been growing number in studies that conducted on using of recycling brick waste (RBW) to produce environmentally friendly concrete. The use of brick waste (BW) as potential partial cement or ...
This paper presents the findings of a laboratory study that investigates the alkali reactivity of crushed red clay brick aggregate. Mortar mixes, in which crushed brick constitutes 10%, 25%, 50% and of aggregate, and concrete mixes, which contained 0%, 50% and crushed coarse brick aggregate, were produced.
Alkali Aggregate Reactivity: Alkali-aggregate reaction is the term mainly referred to a reaction which occurs over time in concrete between the highly alkaline cement paste and non-crystalline silicon dioxide, which is found in many common aggregates. This reaction can cause expansion of the altered aggregate, leading to spalling and loss of ...

Resumen: This work consists of two stages; first, studies were conducted to evaluate the potential reactivity of crushed material (6–20 mm fraction) from two quarries (named A and B) producing basaltic aggregates in the northeast of Argentina (Mesopotamia region, province of Corrientes).
Other Alkali-Silica Reactions. Sand-gravels found in river systems of Kansas and Nebraska are highly reactive and cause map cracking. Replacement of 30% of the aggregate with crushed limestone is effective in reducing the damage. Basically, it results in the separation of flat clay minerals causing very slow expansion. 5. The brick, in crushed form, was from a local brick manufacturer that salvages its off-standard products. It was used to replace 10% and 20% (by weight) of the river sand in mortar. Effects of the brick replacement on the mortar flow, compressive strength, shrinkage, freeze–thaw resistance, and alkali–silica reaction potential were investigated.
aggregate and 50% crushed clay bricks satisfy the minimum strength requirement for the use of concrete in pedestrian facility. In recent times, another subject that has drawn attention among the researchers, is the use of recycled aggregates in alkali-activated and geopolymer concrete to replace natural aggregates

🕑 Reading time: 1 minute Alkali aggregate reactions (AAR) occur when aggregates in concrete react with the alkali hydroxides in concrete producing a hygroscopic gel which, in the presence of moisture, absorbs water and causes expansion and cracking over a period of many years. This alkali-aggregate reaction has two forms, namely: Alkali-silica reaction (ASR) and […]
The mortar aggregate was partially replaced by crushed brick at levels of 10% and 20% by weight, and the effects of crushed brick replacement were investigated on compressive strength, shrinkage, freeze–thaw, and alkali–silica reaction (ASR).
In fact, the recycled clay bricks were also used as aggregates in asphalt concrete (Khalaf et al., 2005). These aggregates were made with granite which was of high porosity and roughness on the surfaces of crushed clay brick aggregates. Monteiro et al., (2003) investigate the effect of ground clay brick to replace cement mass.
