To install the new front plug, I went with Lycoming's suggestion to use a ball peen hammer as the install interface (they also will rent you a proper tool). I set the plug into the crank. It is shaped like a giant steel contact lens. The convex profile to the forward. A few taps with an 8# hammer, the plug dimpled and set in.

The crankshaft plug on the O-320 in my PA-12 was weeping a little so I pulled the prop & replaced it. The airplane has a Univair spinner on it with a solid front bulkhead. Is there any reason why I couldn't/shouldn't pop it in a lathe & put a 2"+/- inspection hole in the center? I've seen other bulkheads with a hole & don't see why we couldn't here as well.

The expansion plug in the end of the crankshaft of my O-320 is leaking oil. I have a new plug but as with everything, I know there are some tricks to removal and installation. Any input would be appreciated since I have never done this before. Thanks.

After reading the Lycoming SI 1435 I understand that to convert to fixed pitch I have to punch a hole in the rear crankshaft plug and install the front plug STD-1211. ( I have the setup as shown on Figure.1 of the SI)
The front expansion plug on the crankshaft justed popped loose a bit spilling some oil after a recent flight. Before I just coat the plug in it in high temp silicone and tap back into place what considerations are in order. Like, why did it happen, will it happen again, do I need to install a new part, etc., etc. Particulars: O-360 A2F.
