With the crank-shaft secured (at the witness hole)remove the bolt from the front crank-shaft TB sprocket. Now loosen all of the oil pan screws and remove the three (3) bolts at the oil seal flange plate. The next step is to remove the front main oil seal flange plate. Note how the seal flange plate has three (3) lifting/pry pionts.
You need to measure the depth of the seal. Pull the seal being super careful not the scratch the crank. Replace the seal matching the depth measured earlier. Then the fun part : Buy or create a special pusher tool to get the hub onto the crank, then use the original bolt and tighten to like 240 ft lbs, remove bolt, measure the depth of the
Allis B front crank seal, felt and rubber. My YT rebuild kit came with two front seals. One is only a rubber lip seal, and fits fairly loosely. I assume that is intended for use with a speedi-sleeve to cover the spiral grooves. The other is wider and has both the felt seal and a rubber lip in the same seal. The direction of the garter seems to ...
Naw. It's the old style front cover- except the seal presses in from the front. Here's the seal number if anyone needs it-2692 (Timken). Got it from Autozone for 10 bucks. It's the good seal with the flange, unline the flangeless seals that most places sell. I didn't finish the job till midnight because I made a tool to use the dampner bolt to ...
Answer: There's many variables to this. Automotive seals generally stay soft for about 10 years and 100k miles. Once they begin to harden that's when they can develop leaks. Lack of fluid maintenance can accelerate this. Letting a vehicle sit for extended periods …
Replacing The Front Crankshaft Seal. Oil underneath the oil pan and front cross member of my 1978 Jaguar XJ-S was the first clue that something was amiss. Locating a leaking crankshaft seal is not for the faint hearted. Crawling under the V-12 at four thousand RPM will make grown men weep.

There are some groves in the end of the crank, I am not sure if this is something i should worry about. The main seal kit came with several pieces.
This seal is located at the front of the crankshaft as it protrudes out of the front of the engine block. The front part of the crankshaft is where the balancer or dampener (same thing) is bolted too and is where the serpentine belt is driven from. Typically the front main seal is pressed into the front timing cover or into the seal …
Crank Snout Seal. This section pertains to the front crank snout seal. The AC B engine uses cork seals throughout, and the front crank snout is no different. The crank snout has a spiral groove cut into the seal surface that swipes oil back into the crank case as the crank turns. Apparently these seals are not easily obtained and the kit we ...
When I wrote the crankshaft pulley, the vibration damper and the radiator must be removed, I was referring to removing the FRONT crankshaft seal which is in the timing chain cover. As far as the REAR main bearing seal is concerned, there is no need to move the transmission back to change it on a 49 Cadillac 331 motor and probably later years of ...
The outer diameter of the oil seal is smaller than the internal diameter of the bore. Choose an oil seal in the proper size and replace the original seal. The oil seal moves in an axial direction along the shaft: The outer diameter of the oil seal is smaller than the internal diameter of the bore. Excess pressure is displacing the oil seal axially.
The following steps are for replacement of the crankshaft front seal. Skip to step 20 if only replacing the timing belt. 12) Mount a piece of stout angle iron to two of the holes in the outer face of the crankshaft pulley with two of the existing bolts. The …
The purpose of a crankshaft seal is to deflect oil back into the oil sump, or oil pan, to both maintain the proper oil level and prevent leaking onto the ground. Your engine has two crank seals; one seal is located at the front of the engine, behind the crankshaft …
When bolted down, the oil pan induces a little crush in the rope, which gives a good oil seal. Crankshaft Step 1: Mike prepares a stock Merc crank. 2005 Mustang 4.6L rebuilt 5000k ago at Fastlane Motorsports in Raleigh, NC. Ever since I got the motor back I have had an issue with the front crank seal leaking, at first though it was the oil pan, over the last 3 years have been through 3 new seals and 2 harmonic balancers, just changed it out again yesterday and no change.
You will need to remove the cover, clean off the gasket surfaces, get a new gasket, and do it over again. If you post a pic of the crank seal, we can tell whether it goes inside or outside the cover. The two types are different. Last edited by 69_Sport; 04/04/19 at 08:59 PM.. Reason: Typo.
Watch to ensure the crank seal in the front cover stays intact during this process (do not lubricate the seal or the corresponding surface on the damper). With either method, once the balancer is on the crank as far as it will go, install your old crank bolt and torque to 240 ft-lbs. Remove it and ensure the crank snout is recessed no more than ...
The service manual and the instruction sheet that comes with the Rear (and Front) Main Seal says not to put oil on the sealing lip and/or journal on the crank. Same manual says its okay to lightly lube the seal's outer diameter for installation into the cover bore but to …
remove the balancer, crank gear, and hub. remove old oil seal. since the housing is aluminum, i do not suggest banging the new seal in without lots of caution as to not damage anything. you may wish to size up the new seal with a socket*, or, use a piece of pvc pipe and washer(s) and use the crank bolt to seat the new seal.

Discussion Starter · #1 · Feb 15, 2011. So while doing my kdp this weekend I put the crank seal in backwards. I was being very careful following instructions, replaced waterpump, cerpentine belt, cleaned everything up etc. I messed up on the seal. I was going off instructions that said yellow out, black in. My seal was yellow and white so I ...
My (naive) question is, which way does the front crank seal go in the timing cover? The seal I have has a spiral spring tensioner, as common to many oil seals. If I insert the seal from the block side of the timing cover, then this ring ends up to the outside of the engine.
The front oil seal is similar to the rear, although its failure is less catastrophic and it is more easily accessed. The front oil seal will be behind the pulleys and timing gear. An oil seal itself is a cheap part, but accessing it requires a lot of labour in removing the transmission, clutch, flywheel and possibly the crankshaft.

Clean the surface where the old seal was installed. Examine the new seal and notice the direction of the outer lip. The bevel of the lip fits inward. The sloped part of the lip faces outward. When oil pressure presses against the inner bevel, the lip of the seal pushes out. If the slope faced inwards, the oil would flow out without any resistance.

You could measure the crank at the front or rear whichever is easier to get to, but you would need to drop the oil pan to get a pry bar working on one of the crank counter weights. Push all the way in one direction, set the dial indicator at zero, then push all the way in the other direction and read how much it moved.

The front crankshaft oil seal can be repaired by any DIYer with the right directions, but unless you have all the right equipment, it is advisable to have the rear crankshaft oil seal replaced by an auto mechanic.
