My (naive) question is, which way does the front crank seal go in the timing cover? The seal I have has a spiral spring tensioner, as common to many oil seals. If I insert the seal from the block side of the timing cover, then this ring ends up to the outside of the engine.

You could measure the crank at the front or rear whichever is easier to get to, but you would need to drop the oil pan to get a pry bar working on one of the crank counter weights. Push all the way in one direction, set the dial indicator at zero, then push all the way in the other direction and read how much it moved.
